David Sandell is an award winning artist in both pencil and oils and his work has appeared in various international art publications. David was born in 1957 and raised in the north east of England. After winning the school art prize he enlisted in the Royal Marines at the age of 16, where he served for over 10 years. He continued to draw and paint during this time before returning to civilian life to pursue a career as a commercial illustrator, studying graphic design and technical illustration. He then worked as an illustrator/designer for 4 years before founding Triad Design Partnership with fellow designers.
Despite the rewards of owning a business, the demands of managing a successful design agency for 30 years may have frustrated his artistic endeavours. However, in recent years his art, in particular portrait painting, has become a major commitment. A pivotal point was attending a summer workshop in New York with Daniel E. Greene, the American master portrait painter. David attends drawing/painting groups in Northamptonshire and London. He has drawn or painted most subjects over the years from maps to murals; from nudes to 4 star generals.
Although he doesn't consider his work mainstream, he has been recognised with various awards and in 2014 was shortlisted for 'Artist of the Year' by Artist & Illustrator magazine (Mall Galleries, London); Voted Top 100 Artists/Illustrators 2014 by 'Creative Quarterly' USA; won First Prize at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters live art event 2009 and 'International Artist' magazine published a major 8 page feature on his work in 2010. He remains joint founder/owner and Creative Director of Triad Limited, whose studios are based at Holdenby House stately home, in Northamptonshire. (www.triad.uk.com)
